A Cure For Hubris
“In the beginning of the contest with Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayers in this room for Divine protection. Our prayers, Sir, were heard and they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a superintending Providence in our favor….And have we now forgotten this powerful Friend? Or do we imagine we no longer need His assistance?”
“I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth: ‘that God governs in the affairs of man.’ And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. I firmly believe this.”
Benjamin Franklin 1777
Benjamin Franklin whom some would argue was neither a moral man nor a Christian made a statement in the Constitutional Convention which is pertinent to our day. His question provoked the assembly to reflect on the way God had guided the creation and preservation of the United States in the perils of harsh winters and war. He would rise and ask that which should resound in the American concise today. “Have we forgotten this powerful Friend? Or do we imagine we no longer need His assistance?” As one looks at the way America has treated God in the past decades it is clear that in many ways we have forgotten the hand which brought us here, and denied His involvement in the affairs of men. When we took the Ten Commandments off the school house wall, and refused to allow children to seek the Lord in the classroom, we evicted our Land Lord.
America did not arrive at its current position of prominence in the world by he spurious acts of “wise” men; it arrived here by the hand of God. America did not overcome the evils of slavery by the mere efforts of “good” men, but rather by the enduring wisdom of God. America did not defeat fascism and communism by the mere strength of its might; rather by the mighty hand of God. Can we now afford to deny the wisdom of providence and snub the God of heaven who has brought us to such a place? Franklin would surmise that if a sparrow could not fall to the ground without the notice of God, how then could a nation rise without His aid. America must today realize that without the aid of heaven, we do not stand a chance in this evil day. I submit that the relative low casualties sustained in Iraq are the result of God’s grace. Further, the fact that we have not endured another 9/11 must be attributed to the protecting arm of God. While we are tempted to congratulate our political parties, and stroke the ego of our ideology, we can ill afford to forget that God works in the affairs of men. We must in humility continue to seek the mercy and favor of God. In light of the way we have scorned Him as a nation and made our life styles inconsistent with His Holy nature, we must repent as a people and again run to Him.
All of us can recall the evening of September 11, 2001, when President Bush sitting in the Oval Office reminded us all that the “The Lord was our Shepherd.” In those trying days for our nation we were led by a man of faith to the sheltering arm of providence that Franklin had relied on centuries before. As we look at the Word of God, we see the foretelling of much harder days with still more days of trial and testing. The recent catastrophe on the Gulf Coast has made clear that very point. In such days of trial we may be dealt hard blows and our resolve will be tested time and again, but if we will rest on the arm of God, He will guide His own through the tempest and the rain. America must today realize that if not for the aid of God, we would not be, and if not for the grace of God we would rightly suffers the wrath due our sin. Often the greatest cure for hubris is a good memory. Perhaps not a pleasant memory; but one that reminds us from whence we have come, and by whose hand we are led. A memory that condemns our hubris, our self confidence and our pride. If we learn anything from these difficult days, is that in spite of how prepared we may be, we are no better than the Tower of Babble when we scorn the aid of God.
